As client care manager for award-winning Honolulu design-build firm Graham Builders, Lenore Smith has seen firsthand what happens when all of the major players are on the same team in the design and construction of a home.

“The design/build process enables and facilitates collaboration – and that’s the key that opens the locked door,” says Smith. “All clients have visions for the homes they want to build. Collaboration can turn a fragmented collection of dreams and ideas into a truly well-planned home that a family loves immediately, and for all time.”

A few of the clients that Graham Builders has served over its 35 years of business shared their thoughts about the power of collaboration.

“It felt like a true partnership with our architectural designer,” said Oahu client Carly I., who added that the process might have been especially challenging without a design/builder, because she did not have a friend or family member with whom to collaborate. “Our designer was there at every turn to bounce ideas off of. She truly understood my vision!”

Honolulu client Eric I. recalled feeling incredibly overwhelmed when it was time to create wish lists for all of the features he and his family wanted for their new home. “Good thing Jenny, Ryan and Keith were there every step of the planning process to give their expert advice, as well as listen to our needs,” he said. “The architecture team came up with a stunning rendition of the ideas we talked about.”

Honolulu client Jared H. recalls that the Graham Builders team invited his family’s input throughout the whole process. “We had multiple planning meetings in which the design of the house was created with the team explaining why things were laid out a certain way,” he says. “They listened to our ideas, and gave their own input on how to make them work better.”

When her family contemplated a major renovation to their home, Oahu client Jennifer B. attended several seminars presented by local builders. “Graham Builders’ seminar was such a wealth of information,” she said. “We had a chance to get to know everyone on the team. Our project manager listened intently to what we wanted, and the design is everything we could have imagined.”
