“Wine is drinkable sunlight. It’s the most glorious summer’s day imaginable, captured in a bottle.” – Author: Walter Moers
Evan’s Summer Wine Picks
Light, refreshing, crisp wines eclipse other options when selecting a summer wine. Known for its refreshment value, Evan recommends Italian varietals for your summer selections. “When heat and humidity are high, consider wines that are fresh and invigorating. Fragrant Italian wines are my favorite to energize on heavy summer evenings.”
Red selections like Beaujolais and Pinot Noir are great matches for Hawaii’s tropical temperatures. An excellent choice is a Louis Jadot Beaujolais or Pinot Noir. “You should be able to purchase a bottle for under $20,” shares Evan, “and it is ideal for summer barbeques or enjoying a summer sunset.
White wines are the classic summer beverage. Evan’s favorites are Abruzzese and Pecorino, both from the Abruzzo region, and available locally for under $25. “I prefer young expressions for the summer because of their famed fruity and floral fragrance,” Evan notes. “Enjoy them with seafood like grilled salmon and lobster rolls. They also pair well with legumes and vegetable dishes.”
Italy produces excellent Rosé that is refreshing and inexpensive. Piedmont and Tretino varietals pair well with foods ranging from deviled eggs to hamburgers, making this the perfect, budget-friendly picnic party wine!
Nothing refreshes better than a iced bottle of sparkling wine. With its light, fizzy and softly fruity character, Prosecco is experiencing a world-wide boom. Many also appreciate its relatively low alcohol content and affordability. “The process of making Prosecco gives it a distinctive crispness. The second fermentation in steel tanks means this bubbly should be enjoyed immediately,” cautions Evan. “Don’t store it away too long – enjoy it now!”
