Deep in Manoa Valley, the community is quite densely packed, with houses nestled right up against the glorious Koolau Range.
Tucked into a quiet corner of this stunningly beautiful valley is a house that is modern and expansive, filled with warm and welcoming natural light.
With five bedrooms and three and a half baths, this multi-generational home, designed and built by Graham Builders of Honolulu, is one of the loveliest homes in the neighborhood.
Rising above the challenges
It’s hard to believe that this bright, handsome, generous home replaces a dark, tiny house built in 1963 – a house that had roughly half of the new home’s living space.
The project began with a Graham Builders seminar. “My wife and I attended their seminar that was held at the Honolulu County Club,” recalls the Manoa homeowner. “It was a very informative presentation.”
The home was originally intended to be a single story for the homeowner’s small family of three, but revisions were made later in the project to add a second story extension to make room for his parent.
“It took almost three years to complete,” the homeowner says. “Part of the delay was adding the unplanned extension, which required another building permit.”
But the biggest challenge, as the homeowner recalls, was trying to make headway on the project during the Covid-19 pandemic. After supply chain challenges, labor shortages, and lockdowns, the home was finally completed, and the family was able to move in.
“The Graham Builders team was easy to work with, and they were always available to assist with changes,” notes the homeowner, adding that the company’s sophisticated computer-aided designs were very helpful as the team worked with him and his family to plan their new home.
Plenty of elbowroom
The multi-generational home boasts a ground-floor master bedroom and master bath, with two smaller bedrooms and an additional one-and-a-half baths, plus a huge dining area, kitchen, and living room.
Centered around an enormous island, the kitchen offers ample work and storage space, with state-of-the-art appliances and a generous pantry, adjacent to the dining room. Perfect for hosting big holiday dinners and gatherings, this area is a family favorite, according to the homeowner. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms and a full bathroom with a wet bar and small living area.
With 3,300 square feet, each member of the ohana has plenty of elbowroom and privacy. Built to last, with plenty of living space, the home is contemporary and welcoming, and easy to maintain.
